Hi Betty Lou..
I have two small girls with baby fine bottom length blonde hair at school..they pick up lice quite often..here is what I do to rid myself of infestations and also to upkeep that while I remember..
Firstly..go to your dollar store and get the cheapest bottle of white (can be pink etc coloured..the thing is to have the white, non opaque type of coniditioner) conditioner in the biggest size you can...here I get a 1 litre bottle for $2-00
Then go home and pour a handful onto your hand and rub it in the persons hair..keep doing this till the hair is soaked in conditioner, so when you comb it..it looks wet (but not so much itts dripping! lol) Then comb through with a normal comb and leave that for 20 mins. After 20 mins or so - take your nit comb and pull once through the hair..(if your hair gets too dry..dampen it down a bit) Sometimes you can see the lice in the build up of conditioner in the teeth of the comb..othertimes they might be buried in it..either way..just rinse that comb (I stand my girls near the hand basin or sit them on a stool in the bath with a hand held shower attachment that I wash their hair with.) after each pull thruogh their hair..comb and comb and comb again..till you go for a while with absolutely no lice in the comb..then I just wash their hair..and condition it with the same cheap conditioner..and rinse as usual.
The conditioner smothers the lice like oil does, but its much easier to get out of the hair with a quick rinse..If you leave the conditioner on your hands, your hands start to feel funny as it coats them..does the same sort of thing to the lice in the hair..and if you lick your finger with conditioner on it..it sort of numbs your lips..same thing..lol..but it wont hurt you and leaving the conditioner in your hair like that is very good for it as well.
You repeat this every 3 days for about 2 weeks I do it..just to make sure there are no viable eggs to hatch etc..It feels like a lot of work at first I guess..but you get used to doing it really quickly. For my older kids..I leave a nit comb in the showers and when they all wash their hair..and condition it..before they wash it out..I get them to drag the nit comb through the hair and rinse in the shower and do that all over their hair, keeps any nits that MIGHT get onto them from younger ones or from others anywhere who you might come into contact with...so once they are big enough to wash their hair alone..let them keep it maintained themselves as a habit to get into.
You dont' need to use any chemicals..I found out AFTER I had to use them so much on my son he actually went bald in a huge spot on top of his head..its the easiest, non smelly, non harmful way that also helps the hair I have ever used and now I have used this method for many many years. You also dont need to be boiling bedding etc..lice only live for 8 hours..so just keep them out of their bed for the day and you are fine. I do change their pillow cases each time we do their hair though. I also pout their pillows outside on the clothes line for the day..turn them over half way through the day..just to make sure the lice die! lol
Sorry this is so long..I like to explain it step by step.
Amanda in Australia - the reason I dont use eo's either is that they burnt my eldest girls skin on her head, even though I am very careful with them as I use them all the time..she had very sensitive skin there obviously..so we dont add them anymore and you dont need to either. Also..while its nit season..I keep that cheap conditioner in their hair (do the treatment, and in the morning, put in a handful of conditioner and then comb and plait hair..the lice hate the conditioner so I leave it in like I was told to do..works lovely on hair..soaks all in dry and makes hair lovely and soft. (we have 7 in our house and 5 are kids)

I read somewhere about rosemary for lice - Do you think I would just
mix a portion of the eo with olive oil and massage? I've already done
the chemical thing, - just want to follow up and too soon for more
chemicals...
I really want to contain this quickly out of 5 of us in the house,
there is just one infestation and one other still questionable - only
found one and it was soon after they had been cuddling. I can shave
the questionable little one down if I have too - he will get over it in
a few weeks!!!
Thinking the olive oil would be good for the damage the pesticides may
have done to her hair and scalp. Her scalp was soooo red.
Thanks!
