Hi all,
I make several very simple lotion/massage bars consisting mainly of
oils, butters, and beeswax. Lately I have tried adding both regular
and modified cornstarch to the mix to cut any greasy feeling on the
skin. Supposedly, lots of bar makers do this regularly, but no matter
how finely I sift it in and stir it well, my starch always sinks to
the bottom of the mix in it's double boiler and just sits there in
little clumps. Sort of like my Thanksgiving day gravy did! :0)
I added water to disperse my gravy starch, but since I use no water in
my bars, I am at a loss as to how to get this to work.
Any suggestions? I am open to trying something other than CS if anyone
has any ideas. I am just trying to cut the greasy feeling on the skin.
Thanks in advance!<<
Hi Mellie,
For some reason it's gotten sort of popular to add a starchy product to an
anhydrous balm type product to "cut the greasy feeling". Some folks use Dry
Flo AF from National Starch (or generic versions from other manufacturers) for
this purpose. To be honest, it just doesn't make sense to me to do this.
For starters, salves or balms or lotion bars (misnomer since the lotion bars
customers talk about are not emulsions) are meant to be oily. If you don't
want to make an oily product, then it would be best to make an oil in water
lotion or cream!
I should mention that most starches will need to disperse in water. A few
starches have an affinity for oil. If you use a water dispersible starch in
your product, you will have a nasty mess. You may be using the wrong starches
for this purpose.
But, it's entirely possible to formulate your anhydrous product with only
oils, butters, waxes, etc. to give it a smooth feel in application and less
"sit on skin" greasiness. Here's one formula you may want to try:
