"To use aloe vera from the plant in home-made lotions, etc, do you have
to sterilize the aloe somehow? Or is it good enough to sanitize the
equipment (knife, plate, etc.) and wear rubber gloves when scraping
the aloe from the leaf?
Is aloe straight from the plant considered water-based? Could I use
this in lip balms without adding a preservative?"

Miranda,
Hello !
Yes, aloe like any plant is mostly water so you cannot use it in a lip balm or other product unless you figure in a preservative.
Some folks are using an aloe powder or an aloe butter, but I do not know how they are treated and therefore just how natural they are - so I have not used them yet.
I use lots of aloe in some of my soaps where I do not need to use a preservative.
I also use quite a bit of it fresh and always have several plants around.
I wonder, if we dried some of our own organically grown aloe - would that be safe to use in a lip balm... or can we not get it dried enough to be safe ???
Organically Yours,
Diana
