I received a recent off-list e-mail, asking if someone could be taken off of
moderation status. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to
discuss how moderation works on this list(and why):

This list, is much different than most, in terms of moderation. At
one point, I was a member of over 125 lists, and most of them had
the same problems - spam, porn, and arguing. Some were totally un-
moderated, others were "sort of" moderated, while others moderated
certain people while they were new, and AFTER they caused a problem.
I have seen droves of people exit these groups, all saying the same
things. When I set up this list, I decided it would be distinctly
different - but how? Every thing I thought of had positives and
negatives. Here's what I came up with, and why:

1. I would be an involved Moderator. If a Moderator doesn't care
about their list, why should anyone else?

2. This would be a list where everyone could come and talk.
Beginner's through Professional are welcome, and for that reason,
there would have to be a "playground teacher", as differences of
opinion are bound to happen.

3. We would have an agree to disagree policy. Vegans/Vegetarians/Non-
Vegetarians co-exist on this list, as do people who have various
thoughts on preservation systems. So far, there has been little
bloodshed, but I feel that is due to this list being tightly
moderated. I feel people are much more careful about HOW they word things, due to this.

4. I would make this a list people of any age would to be able to use. Because of this, I can't "chance" even one off-color post to get through.

5. I have seen the results of what happens when people are un-moderated, after a few posts. I *AM NOT* saying anyone here would be this way, but I have seen what can happen. I have also seen how vindictive some people can be towards other lists. Loosening up on moderation after someone posts a few times could be opening up our list to outsiders just waiting to cause trouble. I have seen that happen!

6. In order for me to keep track of what is going on, it is just easier to filter it as it goes through. I cand keep track of it better, and I don't have to worry about whether or not 50 messages back there is a porn message or a scrum going on between several people.

7. One of the reasons that I do not have some people moderated, and others not, is I don't want to "play favorites", listen to people ask why THEY are moderated, while someone else is not, or try to keep track of who is moderated, and who is not.

8. People on these lists usually belong to many others. Occasionally, people will accidentally e-mail items to the list intending that they go elsewhere. Some are quite "lively". Being moderated weeds out any e-mails not meant for the list. By the way, this has happened.

I *KNOW* the system has its problems. I *KNOW* it tends to slow the list down. I *KNOW* some people are offended by the fact they are moderated. For these problems, I am sorry. But I feel they are trade offs for having a safe haven to come to, and talk about cosmetics, soaps, toiletries, candles, and scented items. Hopefully, some of the unique - well, I feel they're unique - features on this list, will outweigh the moderation issue. I am also hoping the fact the list is moderated is a comfort to parents. I am working the problem of it slowing down the list. Within the next 4 months, or so, you may not even notice the messages are being moderated. Just so people know: Even MY posts need to be approved <grin> I sincerely hope this post, or being moderated, does not offend anyone. I just thought it was time for me to speak up. We've had several new members, and the e-mail I got just poked me in the butt to explain the situation.

This will be put in the files section. It will be sent out to all new members, and will be sent as a reminder to everyone once a month.

Making your own household cleaning products and toiletries is so economical and addicting! And holiday time - it's a huge blessing. Just be careful or you'll get everyone's "Wish List" for Christmas and will be working your tush off! (Don't ask me how I know...LOL)

Hi,

I'm Annette from New Zealand, live on the West Coast of the south island. I have 3 adult children, 2 girls and a boy.

I have got into making soap powder, household cleaners and now lip balms in the last couple of months. As soon as I start making one thing I want to try making others, so thought it would be better to join a group of like minded people.I have been making these for myself but would like to branch out and start making them for gifts also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all! I'm Darz, that's short for Darlene, and I own a 10 acre farm near Lexington Tennessee. It's mainly a family farm for being self sufficient and I live here with my husband, one of our adult sons, and his little boy, Jennings, who we call Buggum.

I started selling eggs, goat milk soap, and a few veggies and such to earn enough money to buy the hay, sweet feed, chicken feed, etc. that we needed. Then I found out how much fun it was and now I want to add lotions to the soap and find more places to sell my products. I'm working on a web page, a logo for my soap wraps, and researching different festivals to go to.

But I ran into a few problems when I made my first attempts at lotion making with goat milk. So I hope to make some friends in here and get some help with my lotions. I'm more than willing to share what I know, altho I'm betting ya'll already know more than I do LOL!

One thing you can do is to use "tottles," which are like bottles made to stand on their heads. That way, it's easy to get the lotion out even if it's thick.

What's been wrong with your thinner ones?

That's more or less the way I got into soapmaking, too. My husband wanted vegetarian soap and was unable to find anything he liked.

Oh, also, you can make lots of other things, like dusting powder, bath salts, lip balm, lotion, even laundry soap. Usually for a lot less expensive than buying it.

Have fun learning! Don't be afraid to ask the group questions--we try to help new soapmakers as much as possible.

Hi, I just joined the list.

I'm a soapmaker and the author of two soapmaking books. I also make lotions, and am in the process of writing a lotionmaking book.

However, I mostly joined the list to learn about other toiletries--now that I'm making most of my soaps and lotions, I'm interested in learning how to do things like lip balm, bath salts, toners, etc. I have no intention of writing any more books--just want to make my own things.

I'll be happy to share whatever I know and look forward to learning from you.

There are companies that do this but are you prepared to buy hundreds
of bottles at a time? And to have them ready for an April 1st deadline
would mean a rush order as well. That's going to be a whole lot of $$$

Since I'm still new to this, I'll say hi! I used to make soap with my mom when I was younger and what an experience it was! So here I am stay at home looking for a hobby and what better than you make soap for my family! Sadly all I have interacted with is the melt and pour, and although I have 1 and a half children (due in March) I would love to get back into the cold process of soap. I'm currently looking for a relative small kit so I can try it out without getting into the bulk amount and so I can maybe get the feel for it. Any suggestions? Or a better idea LOL.. I have extra time on my hands and I would like to stay busy.

Also thinking about dipping into candles (heh sorry for the pun) and maybe trying the body butter soaps. I've seen so many yummy looking whipped soaps and I can't help but think about my own personal touch!

I am going to be throwing my daughter her baby shower. She is having a boy, so the color theme will be blue of course. But, I am drawing a derned blank elsewise, lol.

I need help!!!!!!!! Can you guys give me ideas on games to play, "prizes" to have for the "winners" of the games, shower favors for them to take home, centerpieces (I
saw a gorgeous diaper cake I wanna try making), etc. I know one of the favors my daughter asked for was something soap. Soooooooo, yeah. I want to make as many items

for the shower myself as I possibly can. It is being held inside a hotel, in what is normally reserved for receptions or small gatherings (holds 120 people). She will also

be staying at the hotel that night, as part of her gift. No food is allowed within the reception area except the cake or a snack due to the hotel doing catering also.....but we

can have food stuffs in the room, lol.

BUT, if anyone has ANY ideas, links, booklets, etc. that they could share with me, I would so appreciate it!!!!!! Time is moving fast for some reason (never did when I was

pregnant, lol) and I want to get started now on it all.

[Cosmetic_Soap_Toiletry_Candle_Scent] This weekends craft show

Well, this weekend finally got here, and is now finally over. This was the weekend of the yearly Craft Show I participate in here in town. I did

well, even though I had honestly not even wanted to do it this year (so much happening). Against my wishes, I DID participate, and came away

happy that I did. Not only did I make enough to catch up on 2 bills, but I also had a great time visiting with the 2 vendors on each side of me.......

truly wonderful people. Both of them, it turns out, have purchased from me in the past. The one vendor purchased pain cream from me and

gave me raves about how it helped his back pain. He purchased more........then close to the end of the day we traded products, lol. This vendor

and his wife make and sell cinnamon almonds (company is Perfectly Nuts)!! These are to DIE for. SO good, and SO addicting. But, it works for us

both to trade! Then, the vendor on the other side of me is a man who I met last year during the winter craft show (Winterfest)! He had run up to my

booth, bought a lip balm, and ran back to his booth, lol. He came by later that day and told me I was selling them too cheap cause he loved it! It

felt great to hear. Then, this weekend was full of them complimenting not only the products they had purchased in the past, but ones they just bought

Saturday!!! I also had customers from past years coming back to buy more items, and giving me great feedback and compliments. SO, I went from

dreading the weekend, to being VERY proud!

The items selling great for me this year were the pain cream, the room sprays, the wax tarts, the incense, and the body mousse. Lip balms went

great, but not as well as the other items. Wax crumbles didn't sell at all, sold 2 detox soaks, sold about 15 bars of soap. MANY of them were

asking when my site was going to be up and running for sales. SO, hubby says we ARE going to get it done asap! That would be nice.

Overall, it was a great weekend. I also met another soaper.........though it could have been thru better circumstances. I did not know what had gone

on, til after it was brought to my attention. I felt horrid, and needed to speak to the other soaper. Apparently, while I was helping my neighbor vendor

(watch his booth while he went potty), my hubby had my daughter friend go down to the other soapers booth. He had her check out their soap (one kind

is all they sell) and ask what size, price, etc. WELLLLL, it is a husband and wife team that run that booth, and the husband came to my booth while I was

answering a question from the other vendor neighbor. He saw my daughters friend, asked if she was at that booth (mine), she told him yes, and he got

upset looking and asked her "then why were you at my booth asking about my soap and my prices"? He was upset, and rightfully so. He walked away, and

it was after he left that I was told what had happened. As I said, I was upset, and am still angry with my husband. SO, I went down to the booth that this

man and his wife have. I asked to speak to them both, and I apologized for what my husband had this girl do, and for the girl doing it. It was not right

and I didn't approve of it. I told them I did not know he had done that, and I do not know WHY he did that. I felt terrible, and needed to apologize to them

myself. They were fine with it, they understood. I ended up speaking to them for a bit, and I spoke to the wife of the soaping groups on Yahoo that I am

a member of............she asked for me to send her the names of the groups since she is not a member of any of them and would love to join. SO, I have

her card and will be sending her the information so hopefully she can join. As I told her, I felt horrible cause fellow soapers (heck, fellow crafters), are part

of a big "family" and support each other........they do not do what my husband did.

But, I am now very worn out. I am sunburned horribly (mostly my upper back, face, the part in my hair (lmao, ouchy), and my lower arms. I am going to take a

shower, get comfy, and hopefully get some decent sleep finally.............before I have to get up for work tomorrow morning, lol.

Suspension of the salt may be tricky at the heat level of melted Glycerin soap. I assume you're inquiring about M & P? Maybe layering it would help that, but you have to consider what the salt may do to the lathering ability of glycerine, which is not fabulous in the first place. It is a delicately balance beast, and adding much to it other than color, fragrance, some herbs maybe, does throw that balance off.

If you've got some M&P to sacrifice, you might try it on a small scale first and see how it goes. I can see where it may look cool to use the clear glycerine and mix powdered colors with the salt before adding it.

I recently made 2 batches of sugar scrub cubes using clear M & P, with powdered clay for color, fragrance, and castor oil for extra conditioning, but it did knock back the bubbles I usually get from that particular clear, which was Stephenson's SLS free clear.

Cindy, that sounds like a lush recipe! Gonna have to try it. Here is what I use and they are simple and very popular. My sister says her skin has never been better, and she has suffered with cystic acne all her life.

Coconut 50%
Rice Bran Oil 40%
Shae butter 10%

1/2 cup salt per pound of oils.

See directions below for lye and handling instructions--

I like to separate the quantity of coarse Kosher and table sea salt and put color in the salt. I divide out the recipe after lye is added, and mix in the colored salt. Then I put Titanium dioxide in one batch and layer the colored batches into a loaf mold. I use coarse salt on top, with shiny diamond dust mica, or color in it.

These are the directions from the lady who gave me the original recipe that I modified:

Begin Quote:

"Sweetviolet's Spa Salt Bars

90% Coconut
10% Shea Butter
1/2 cup coarse sea salt per lb of oils

Run through Soap Calc, did not take water discount,
superfat at 15%. Blend oils (I do not melt or just
slightly melt so they can be mixed together well),
mix lye and water and add to oils when lye has cooled
(I use room temp oils and lye). When at medium trace
added colorant and fo or eo, and then coarse sea salt,
swirling together. Pour into log mold, add salt to top,
patting lightly to get salt to adhere to top of soap.
Place in preheated oven at 150 degrees, left for 2 hours,
shut off oven, left until morning. I have also left in
a warm oven at 150 degrees over night (well from say 2
until 8). This worked well so the soap was warm when I
was ready to cut. Bars must be slightly warm to cut, or
will be very hard and they might crumble. If too cool, put
back in oven at 150 degrees for about a half hour and
cut immediately.

That is the basic recipe I used, but you can switch other
oils as long as you use at least 50-60% coconut. I have
used alkanet infused rice bran oil, castor and/or sunflower.
I have subbed Monoi for up to 50 % of coconut to make a
decadent, lovely fragranced bar.

Do not use Epsom salts, it is not the same as sea salt, and a lot of people
have had problems using Dead Sea salt. I just use plain sea salt. I prefer
the coarse, but you can use med or fine.

Cut while warm, or rewarm in oven to cut." End Quote

These are awesome, and I'm so thankful someone gave me a leg up on making them.

I have "heard" you should use 100% coconut oil because the salt has a tendency to make the lather non-existant. ALSO, be careful what type of salt you use. The first time, I used Dead Sea Salt - WRONG!!! This causes your bars to "cry" and weep because of the mineral content. I didn't believe this - or I just wanted to see if this was true. So many times you read stuff and think it's a valid formula, only to find out it doesn't work (and can be QUITE expensive).
Well, this was a true statement. The first try was 100% 76 degree Coconut Oil and the Dead Sea Salt!
Here is the second recipe I tried:
504 gr Coconut (76 degree) Oil
72 gr Castor
144 gr Grapeseed
274 gr Water
111 gr Lye
576 gr Fine Sea Salt

I got great lather, but the salt didn't feel exfoliating after the first use. Grated, you still feel smooth and slick, but I guess I expected more of that exfoliating feel. I recently purchased some COARSE grade Sea Salt and will be using the same formula. Will try to post my "review" of this.
I know there are others in this group that are more accomplished soapers than myself and am certain they will "chime in" shortly. If you do try this, be sure to use the safe practices. I poured at a very light trace and used a fragrance oil.

I learned that cream will not blend well when the temp in the house is 60 degrees or lower. I had one big mess that would not mix/pour. Optimal temp is 77F (25C), but anything over 70F will do.

could use to make her a perfume or cologne, or know what fragrances or
essential oils I could blend to come up with a scent that would be similar?

Hello Linda, you won't be able to do this using essential oils. You would need a smell alike fragrance oil or start from stratch using certain perfume chemicals. not easy and expensive. i can tell you more if you want. email me. !
